SUMMARY:The role of the vestibular system in postural and piloting tasks
DESCRIPTION:It has long been known that severe vestibular damage causes postural impairments\, but less is known about the role of the vestibular system who are “healthy.” Furthermore\, little is known about the specific vestibular cues (e.g.\, tilt vs. translation vs. rotation) that contribute to postural control. In this presentation\, I will discuss our recent studies that examine the role of vestibular cues in postural control in subjects with no known vestibular deficits. I will also present our recent findings showing that variations in vestibular function among young\, healthy subjects are correlated with performance in a simplified piloting task. Finally\, I will interpret these results in terms of the hypothesis that sensory neural noise impairs performance in closed-loop control.\n \nDr. Faisal Karmali\, Ph.D.\nDr. Karmali is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and the Co-director of the Jenks Vestibular Physiology Lab at Massachusetts Eye and Ear\, Boston\, MA\, USA. He studies the vestibular system\, multisensory integration\, and closed-loop control using computational and experimental approaches. \n \ng-Meet link:\nhttps://meet.google.com/fsu-gbug-yvm \nFlyer: \nKarmaliFaisal at UPC_2021.07.01_Flyer

SUMMARY:Xartec Salut - TRAINING PILL - How to obtain the CE Mark with Medical Devices: Introduction to the EU MDR 2017/745
DESCRIPTION:How to obtain the CE Mark with Medical Devices: Introduction to the EU MDR 2017/745 \n– Carmen Martín – \nBrief description of the session / register \nMedical technologies are the top technical field in patent applications in Europe since 2020. However\, only a small percentage of these patents obtain the CE Mark\, which is one of the most important milestones. European certification requires meticulous planning by the manufacturer from a regulatory perspective. In order to ensure that medical devices are safe\, this training lays the foundation for regulatory planning\, beginning with the classification of the device\, the EU regulatory ecosystem\, the conformity assessment procedure\, the clinical evaluation\, the development of the technical documentation\, and the requirements for quality management system certification and registration. \nCarmen Martín has a career of more than 25 years of experience in Regulatory Affairs\, Clinical Research and Quality Assurance\, working with the Medical Devices Industry. Carmen is an expert in ensuring that regulatory strategies are conducted effectively to meet business objectives and legal requirements as well as protect life and human health. Carmen has led over 200 internal and external audits as a lead auditor and technical product specialist for Medical Devices and In-Vitro Diagnostic devices as well as their manufacturers. Carmen is also a MedTech guest speaker in the start-up and university ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Xartec Salut - TRAINING PILL - "Key points to successfully protect your inventions by patents\, copyright and know-how"
DESCRIPTION:“Key points to successfully protect your inventions by patents\, copyright and know-how”\n– Bernabé Zea – \nDescription of the session /register \nThis talk\, aimed especially at researchers\, will explain the steps to be taken to obtain adequate protection for inventions in order to facilitate the transfer of technology and\, ultimately\, its commercialization and monetization. \nFirst\, the different forms of protection (patents\, know-how and copyright) will be briefly described\, as well as the requirements for obtaining them. The concept of freedom to operate associated with the product or service to be commercialized will also be explained. \nThe difference between invention and commercial product will then be clarified. How it is possible to protect different aspects of the product through different patents\, or by using different forms of protection. How to extrapolate protection from concrete solutions found in the laboratory\, to broad inventions that can offer protection to a much more commercially interesting platform will also be covered. \nThere are certain discoveries that are not patentable. In addition\, in recent years the criteria for exceptions to patentability that exist in Europe and the USA have been separated and have become much more demanding in the USA\, especially in the area of diagnostics. What can and cannot be protected in both territories will be explained. \nSoftware\, an indispensable element in many medical devices\, will be given special consideration\, as it is patent-protectable under certain conditions\, but can also be protected by copyright. How to take advantage of this dual protection will be explained. Protection through know-how may sometimes be the best route to follow\, this too will be explained. \nIn the case of patents\, the different existing protection routes\, the times associated with protection and also the costs will be discussed. So that the researcher can adjust the protection to the timescale of their research. It will also be explained which experiments are necessary to achieve better protection\, so that the effectiveness of the experimental results can be maximized. \nFinally\, different examples will be used to facilitate the practical application of the course content covered. A compilation will be made of the key ideas that any researcher or innovation manager should know about the protection of inventions. \n \nBernabé Zea is founding partner of ZBM Patents & Trademarks\, one of the most reputed Spanish patent firms. Bernabé has extensive experience in preparing patentability\, infringement and freedom-to- operate opinions\, negotiating patent licences\, conducting due diligence and drafting patents. His practice focuses on organic chemistry and pharmacy\, but also includes biotechnology and biochemistry. \nHe frequently acts as an expert in patent court actions before Spanish courts. He has acted as a technical expert both within and outside Spain in many cases involving blockbuster drugs such as atorvastatin\, escitalopram\, alendronate\, tamsulosine\, venlafaxine and the most recent cases of fulvestrant and pemetrexed. \nBernabé is CEO of ZBM BConnect a consultancy firm that assists private companies and public research institutions when optimizing their technology transfer activities. His main duties in ZBM BC are the management of the company\, obtaining technology from companies and other institutions and conducting negotiations to transfer the technology. \nHe started teaching at the Patent Centre of the University of Barcelona in 1988. He is an expert in searching patent and scientific literature\, as he was a representative of both STN International and Chemical Abstracts Service in Spain for over 10 years. Before this\, he worked for Questel-Orbit. He currently combines his position as partner at ZBM with his position as professor at the University of Barcelona. \nSince 1988 he has lectured regularly on patent matters on courses organised by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office and the Patent Centre of the University of Barcelona\, as well as on the main Spanish master’s programmes on intellectual property. He has authored several\narticles on patent matters and patent documentation in Spanish newspapers and specialised journals. \nFinally\, Bernabé is vicepresident of Ahead Therapeutics. This start-up biotech company uses a proprietary technology to develop treatments for different autoimmune disorders. \n

SUMMARY:Xartec Salut - TRAINING PILL - New changes introduced by EN ISO 14155:2020 in clinical investigations with medical devices
DESCRIPTION:New changes introduced by EN ISO 14155:2020 in clinical investigations with medical devices\n– Maria Nyakern – \nBrief description of the session /register\nThe ISO 14155:2020 (Clinical investigation of medical devices for human subjects – Good Clinical Practice) is the third edition of this standard of reference for the design\, conduct\, recording\, and reporting of medical device clinical studies. It provides guidance to manufacturers and clinical research professionals on how to implement Good Clinical Practice (GCP) for pre and post-market clinical investigations designed to determine the safety and performance of a medical device. This session will focus on the new requirements introduced by the ISO 14155:2020\, summarizing the differences with the prior version and putting in the context of the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR 2017/745). \nMaria Nyåkern is the President and CEO\, leading the company to align the organization to its expansion in the medical device B2B sector. Dr Nyåkern founded AKRN Scientific Consulting in 2018 after working nearly 15 years in the regulatory and clinical development of medical devices technology at multiple medical device companies such as Cordis JnJ\, Trivascular Inc\, Medtronic and Abbott. Maria Nyåkern is a Doctor of Cell Biology at Stockholm University\, Sweden (2003)\, and has completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Bologna\, Italy (2006).
